I had the lyrics before the music on this one, and once I sat down on the piano the song wrote itself. The inspiration/idea for this song came from supporting a family member who was coping and dealing with addiction. I attended meetings, met with her counselors, and witnessed first hand the struggles and consequences that my cousin and others were dealing with. Very quickly I developed personal relationships with some of the others in treatment and their family members. As the program progressed new people would join the existing group and during one of these meetings I thought about what I might say as a songwriter to someone new. There’s a delicate balance between coping with the harsh reality of whatever life situation you’re in and validating recovery. As a “normal” I know I’m an outsider to those who are in a program so I didn’t want to preach, judge, or make too much of my own role as family member... all in about three minutes! I’ll be producing a more complete version of this song very soon, and this live piano/vocal performance is being used as a frame for the bass player and drummer.Take Care, Bill
